I took a moment to think about how easily she had shifted into using my real name but didn’t think about how much I liked that.

“You’re a very kind person, Amethyst. And I’m sorry it’s come to this,” I said, my voice filled with regret that I genuinely felt.

Whatever she heard didn’t reassure her. In fact, she looked alarmed. “Come to what?”

“These pictures prove that we have more than a collegial relationship.”

“And?” she asked, clearly annoyed now.

“Now look at the other papers in the file.”

She did.

I watched as she read and watched as the realization dawned.

“These are all bullshit,” she said, looking angry.

“Of course, they are, but you can’t prove that,” I said.

“How did you do this?” she asked, her voice tight.

“It was easy enough to spoof your credentials to get into the system. Plus, all the times you accessed the database to look at invoices and container weights make a nice little narrative. And it looks like you’ve been a very busy lady, Amethyst.”

“You’re going to fucking frame me?” Her voice was high-pitched, her eyes wide with anger.

“Not if I don’t have to,” I responded.

“And the way I keep you from having to is to keep my mouth shut,” she said.

“Yes,” I responded.

I could see the hurt on her face, but I didn’t let that influence me.

This was the least damaging thing that could happen to her, and I suspected she knew that.

Still, I could see the injury in her expression.

“So you fucking framed me!”

I nodded.

She shook her head like she wanted it not to be true. But I saw when the reality of it hit her. “I know how good you are, so it will be hard to prove the truth.”

“Very, if it can even be done,” I said.

“And it won’t matter anyway. Because by the time we get through the investigation, the mess will have been made. So what if I’m ultimately vindicated? Nobody cares about that. Or they won’t after a year or two of back-and-forth.”

“No, they won’t.”

“My family’s business will be destroyed, as will my good name.”

“Yes,” I responded, not at all surprised that she understood the implications of all of this so immediately.

“Well,” she said with a shrug, “it looks like you got me.”

I was expecting her acquiescence and knew that she was smart enough to see that there was no other way.

But still, something about her was off.
