“What is it?”

“What’s what?” she asked, her words short, clipped.

“You’re bothered. Something has upset you,” I said.

“Of course something has upset me! I’m getting screwed over when I didn’t do shit but pay attention.”

“Yes, but that’s not what’s bothering you,” I said.

She scowled at me, her eyes boring into mine.

“What makes you think that?”

“A hunch,” I responded as I continued studying her. She had every reason to be upset, but my gut told me it wasn’t just the frame job. It was something else, and I wouldn’t leave until I knew what.

She looked at me, her eyes telling me she wanted to force-feed me those pictures.

“Was that necessary?” she asked.

Her voice was low, sounding almost lethal.

And underneath that, hurt in a way I hated.

“Was what necessary?” I asked.

“I mean the logs,” she said, continuing on like I hadn’t spoken. “I guess I can understand those. But the other stuff…”

“What other stuff?”

“That kiss,” she said on a low hiss.

“What about it?” I asked, confused.

“What about it?” she mimicked. “You screwed me over, have me in a horrible position, but did you have to kiss me?”

“I—”

“Shut up. And get out of my house,” she said, cutting me off.

“What’s the problem?” I asked.

She looked at me like I was insane. “What’s the problem?”

“Well, I mean I know you’re not happy about this, but it was you who went snooping.”

“No, it’s you who’s committing a fucking crime,” she retorted.

“That may be the case, but I didn’t try to involve you. And right now, I’m trying to give you the best possible opportunity to stay out of this. So I don’t get why you’re so pissed.”

“You don’t get—”

I cut her off with a shake of my head. “I mean, I get why you’re upset, but what about the kiss?”

“Never mind. Just get out!” she said, her voice trembling.

She stood, and on instinct I went to her, touching her shoulder.

She flinched away.

“I asked you to leave,” she said, her voice completely flat, inflectionless.

I looked at her face, saw that she was stricken, seeming like she wanted to cry, though no tears fell.

“Amethyst, what is it?”
