His voice was soft, coaxing, and I was again struck by this different side of him. There was almost a…tenderness to him, which was something I didn’t at all expect.

I shook my head, chiding myself for falling again, and so easily.

“You didn’t have to kiss me. You had me dead to rights. You didn’t have to do that,” I said quietly.

He studied me for a long moment, his big hand touching my cheek.

“What if I wanted to?” he asked, his voice soft and rough, silk over sand.

My reaction was immediate, powerful, all of me wanting him. I pushed that feeling down ruthlessly. Then I stared him for a moment and laughed.

He looked surprised, his eyes narrowed.

“That was funny?”

“No, it was fucked up. Not funny,” I finally said.

I looked at him.

“I know that you are a scumbag criminal mob guy, but don’t be an asshole too,” I said.

“I’m not a scumbag,” he countered.

“You aren’t denying the criminal mob guy thing,” I said.

He shrugged. “It’s true. But that’s not what we were talking about.”

“Oh, that,” I said.

“Yeah, that,” he countered.

“I’m really supposed to believe you kissed me because you wanted to?” I asked.

I managed to look him in the eyes while I spoke, a feat that impressed me.

“Yeah, what other reason would I have to?”

“My point exactly! I am already in a terrible position. You didn’t have to add insult to it,” I said.

“Kissing you was an insult?” he asked, looking confused.

I wasn’t used to this.

Josh Kelley was smart, and Davit Petrosyan was even smarter. But right now, he was being idiotic.

“Yeah. It was. Look,” I said, my emotions suddenly threatening to get the better of me, “That wasn’t cool.”

“Kissing you because I wanted to wasn’t cool?”

“No, kissing me to trick me wasn’t cool.”

“I’m not following this, but one thing that’s clear is that you think I had some ulterior motive, besides the obvious,” he conceded, “to kiss you.”

“Yeah. I guess I’m an easy target, so why not make fun?” I said, hating how defeated, deflated, and pathetic I sounded.

“Amethyst,” he said quietly.

Something about the tone of his voice made me look up and meet his eyes.
