“What the fuck are you smirking about?” I practically growled at him.

“Amy, your language,” he said, his voice teasing.

I grabbed the ice cream scoop I had placed on my desk. “I will dig your eyeballs out of your head if you don’t leave me the fuck alone,” I said.

“Don’t you mean ‘Thanks for rescuing me?’” he said low, his voice teasing.

“I mean exactly what I said. And in case you missed it, I’m about to choose violence,” I said, giving him a dead-eyed stare.

He just laughed and walked away.

When I didn’t hear him in the hall anymore, I slammed the ice cream scoop down on the desk and then plopped down in my chair.

I wasn’t sure what was more surprising: my pal Josh being an Armenian mobster, Keenan proposing to me out of the blue, or how badly I still wanted Davit despite all that I knew.

None of this should have happened. That all of it had come to pass left my head spinning.

And terrified to think about what might come next.
