“Sit,” I said.

“I’m fine. I can still make tea,” she said with a smile.

“Tea?” I asked.

“Yeah, I usually hate the stuff, but the nausea is killing me. Paulette says this ginger tea will help. She also says the nausea is a sign,” she said.

“That he’s coming?”

“Yeah. But I haven’t felt a thing,” she said.

I noticed something pass her face, but I didn’t remark on it.

Instead, I led her to the couch, then prepared her tea and brought it to her.

I watched her while she drank, and when she finished, she looked at me.

“What’s on your mind?” she asked.

“I was going to ask you the same thing,” I responded.

“Nothing. Well, besides the obvious. And I’m really glad we found Paulette,” she said.

“Me too. She’s been very helpful,” I said.

And she had been.

She and Amethyst had hit it off, and I was happy that Amethyst had that female presence that she wanted and help for when the baby came.

She smiled conspiratorially. “I also think Erik is happy we found her too,” she said.

“Yes, I noticed he’s very eager to volunteer to pick her up and take her home.”

“Yeah. It’s adorable,” she said.

She smiled, the low light in the room reflecting off her glasses, but doing nothing to hide her enthusiasm.

“That’s not what’s on your mind,” I said.

“I…”

She trailed off, but I didn’t push. One of the things I had learned was that Amethyst was open and expressive. But in her own time.

The more I pushed, the less likely she was to respond well.

She stared at me, seeming to consider something before she finally spoke.

“I want to be married,” she said in a quiet voice.

“What?” I asked, my voice deep.

“Oh God. I can’t believe I said that. I’m blaming the hormones,” she said, as she tried to stand.

I touched her shoulder, and she settled back on the couch.

“Yeah, can’t quite get away like I used to, huh?” She laughed.

I gave her a smile, but didn’t speak.
