He nodded, affirming my statement. “I think so. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense. She’s alone at night and she parks in the farthest end of the parking lot? Not typical behavior,” he said.

“Unless she was compelled.”

“Or trying to hide,” Narek said.

He looked at me quickly, I could tell to gauge my reaction, but I didn’t give one.

“But,” he said.

“But what?”

“She made one mistake.”

“Show me,” I said.

He changed the video on the screen and then hit Play.

“Her car was parked at the far end of the lot, near the home goods and garden section, which would have been closed that late at night. So she left through the grocery store entrance.”

“And that area is more covered with cameras?”

“Usually, no. The cameras are divided between both sides of the store, but after a certain hour, they switch over and focus on where the primary foot traffic is.”

“So you caught her?”

“Yeah. I think so.”

He tapped the screen, and I stared at the blurry dot that could have been Amy—or could have been a smudge.

“Do I need to enhance that?” I asked.

“I already did,” he responded.

He pulled up yet another screen, and it showed a zoomed in still of the video.

“That’s her. Upper left.”

I looked, saw a figure that I recognized as Amethyst. “It looks like she’s avoiding the cameras,” I said offhandedly.

He nodded. “And had she come at a different hour, she would have. But this camera caught the corner of the store, and her.”

“So what do you think?” I asked, looking from the screen to Narek.

“Well…” he started, then looked at me tentatively.

“Don’t hold your tongue. What do you think?” I asked.

He waited a moment, and then began.

“She’s definitely trying to hide from the camera. Now whether that is of her own volition…”

“You can’t be sure,” I interjected.

“I can’t,” he said, but something in his voice caught my attention.

“But?”

“But I would bet she was alone,” he said.
