I wastrue to my word and tried to have a good day. I took a nap soon after Davit left.

I woke refreshed, but also anxious to get out.

Before, it hadn’t occurred to me how active I had been, but it was hitting me now.

I tried to remember a time in my life where I’d been idle, and hadn’t come up with any.

My father hated shiftlessness, so he’d kept me busy while I was growing up. In college, I’d had my studies and part-time work to fill the hours.

And after, I had devoted a great deal of my time—almost all of it—to James Industries.

And once I had run, the time that I hadn’t spent worrying about getting found I’d spent working or trying to plan for the future.

But, at least for now, it seemed that was over. So, I found myself at a loss for what to do. My walks had become more than exercise and fresh air.

It was silly, but they were a task, something for me to accomplish every day. And I loved them.

As I left, it wasn’t lost on me that today was a little bit different.

I walked my regular route, but instead of settling at my usual bench in the center of the park, I went off to the side.

I stared at the phone Davit had given me, and then, finally, made a call that for some reason I had been avoiding.

“Hello?”

At the sound of Carol’s voice, I felt tears threaten to fill my eyes.

“Hello?”

She was on the verge of hanging up, so I took a deep breath and then spoke. “Carol?”

I was pleased that my voice sounded almost normal, and I hoped that she could hear the emotion.

“Amy?”

I laughed. “Yeah, it’s me.”

There was so much more I wanted to say, so much more I should say, but I didn’t.

“Oh God! It’s you!”

“Yeah. How are you, Carol?”

“Old, but who cares about me? How are you?”

“I’m fine,” I said.

It was only after I spoke the words that I realized how true they were.

The situation was confusing, and had the potential to become dangerous, but I really was fine.

“Fine,” she scoffed.

I laughed again. “Well, I am,” I said.
