Thirty-Two

Amethyst

“Are you sure?”Davit asked about four days after Carol arrived.

In the weeks since we’d gotten Crystal back, everything was falling into place.

I’d gotten us settled in the apartment, content to stay for as long as it suited us. Crystal was perfect. Paulette and Erik were well on the mend. Even Carol had stuck around, which made me happier than I’d ever admit to her.

But there was something hanging, something I’d been avoiding.

It was time to stop doing so.

“I am,” I said, looking at Davit.

He didn’t believe me.

It seemed impossible to believe, but I had gotten good at reading him. Knew that he was concerned.

Loved him for it.

“I am,” I repeated, squeezing his hand.

I was ready. At the very least, I was done running.

“I’m going to take her on the balcony,” he said, scooping up Crystal.

He walked two steps then stopped, turned to me. “I’m here for you, Amethyst,” he said.

I smiled at him, believing that.

Knowing it with every fiber of my being.

Just as I knew it was time for me to have this long overdue conversation.

The sliding glass door had barely closed before there was a knock.

“Come in,” I said.

The door opened, and my mother walked in.

The sight of her still shocked me, and my mind rebelled before reality set in.

Her expression was wary, but she approached.

“Have a seat,” I said.

I gestured toward the chair at the far end of the sofa, not sure how far away I wanted her to be.

Or how close.

Her expression was impassive, anticipatory.

She sat, and I did too, and then silence prevailed.

I let it sit, not giving into my usual tendency to talk, to try to fill the space.

There was nothing I could do to do that, and a few minutes of silence between us wasn’t the worst thing.
