“Carol, you’re ridiculous,” I said.

“I might be ridiculous, but I’m also right. And there’s a baby!” she said.

I brightened. “Yes. Come see her.”

Carol jumped up before I had barely finished the sentence.

I laughed then went quiet when I looked out the balcony window and saw my mother.

She looked away quickly, but I had again seen the fleeting look of hurt on her face. For some reason, I’d held back on letting her meet Crystal. My anger had faded, but I was still afraid, worried that this was some kind of dream or sick joke, worried that she would be snatched away from me again. Letting her meet Crystal felt monumental, and I wasn’t ready for it yet.

I couldn’t do anything about her pain now, or wasn’t sure I could, so instead I smiled at Carol.

“Come on,” I said, laughing as I hooked my elbow in hers.
