It wasn’t my wedding, but it was nice to bring us all together for something that wasn’t a tragedy.

I saw that the buffet tables were perfect, that there was seating, and drinks, of course, and then went up to the second floor to check in on Paulette.

I knocked on the door. “Come in,” Paulette said through the closed door.

I opened it and saw her sitting in the living room.

She looked regal in her off-white satin pantsuit.

“There’s nothing you need to do?” I asked.

“I’m dressed. My hair is done. And thank you for suggesting the pearls. They look great,” she said.

And they did. The stylist had braided pearls into Paulette’s pinned-back hair, and it was just the right touch. Something special but not too over-the-top.

“You look great.”

“What is it?” she asked a moment later.

“You just seem so…calm,” I said.

“Well, Amy, I’m in my sixties. It takes a lot to get me excited,” she said.

“Yeah, you say that, but I see it,” I said, taking a closer look at her.

And while she was calm and exuded that calm strength that I had come to expected on from her, I could see that she was excited.

After a moment, she gave me a conspiratorial smile.

“It’s a little silly. I’m not some young person, in fact I’m anything but, but it is exciting. I didn’t ever think I would get married,” she said.

“I bet Erik is thinking the same thing,” I said.

She nodded. “We talked about it. And both of us are surprised, but I’m so happy,” she said.

She looked at me, a soft smile on her lips.

“What?”

“It’s just. I remember when we first met, how nervous you were,” she said.

I put my hand on my cheek and smiled, embarrassment certainly on my face.

“It’s fine. You were about to be a new mother, and I’m used to that. It’s just I never thought something so straightforward could change my life like this.”

“Not all for the good, I’m sorry to say.”

“What? I lost a spleen. It’s pretty useless as far as vital organs go. But I gained something much more valuable. I’m glad you and Davit took a chance on me. Helped me find the love of my life, long after I’d stopped believing in such a thing,” she said.

I hugged her then pulled back.

“You’re welcome. Now, no more talk like this. We worked way too hard on that makeup to ruin it before the ceremony.”

“Yes ma’am,” she said.

I looked at my watch and jumped up. “I guess I better get dressed,” I said.

I scurried back upstairs, quickly dressed, and made it downstairs.

The ceremony passed quickly, and the party afterward was great.

“Thank you, Amy,” Erik said after the first dance.

It was probably the thousandth time he had said it, but I just smiled.

“You’re welcome,” I said.

And then I looked over at Davit, who gave me a smile of his own, and knew that I had never been happier.
