Even more so than the hours and days without them.

I didn’t want to let my mind wander, but I couldn’t shake the fear that gripped me, knew I wouldn’t be able to go on if I’d gotten so close and still lost them.

No. That won’t happen.

I wouldn’t let it.

Amethyst was waiting on me, and I wouldn’t let her down.

Not ever again.

I’d wanted to keep her on the phone but had resisted because it wouldn’t be smart. The phone needed to be charged, and I didn’t want to risk someone else tracking her, or her somehow losing it, severing that tenuous connection.

I told myself it was fine, said that soon my family would be back where they belonged.

I looked at the guard who was driving, and without even speaking, he sped up.

But he didn’t drive directly to the location.

I wanted to, more than anything, but I knew I had to be smart.

So we approached from the opposite direction and sent a scout ahead to make sure there was no danger, at least none that was visible on a first pass.

There wasn’t.

As we got closer, I saw a figure crouching off the road, not trying to stay out of sight. There was no point in it. The entire area was empty, and there was nowhere to hide.

The car got even closer, and I saw that the figure was Amethyst, could only hope the little bundle in her arms was Crystal.

“Amethyst!” I yelled, jumping out of the car before it came to a complete stop.

She tried to stand, but before she could, I lifted Crystal out of her arms and then pulled her up beside me.

I wrapped my free arm around her tight, held her close to me.

“Are you okay?” I whispered, unable to keep the emotion out of my voice.

Her face had been dry, but when she looked at me, the tears started to fall.

I kissed them away, wiped her cheek, and then grabbed her head with one of my hands.

My gaze locked on hers, hoping she could feel everything that I was, the relief, the joy, the promise that nothing like this would ever happen again.

“I’m fine. Now let’s go home,” she whispered.
