This wasn’t like him.

He was generally a man of few words, and those words he did offer were meaningful. He only talked this much when he was fucking with Elias or when he had something to hide.

He was being evasive now, and I suspected I knew the reason.

“Were the Sargsyans involved in this?” I asked.

“And what is this, Davit?”

“Isaac, you’re playing games, and we don’t have the time or patience for it,” Elias said.

“I don’t think this is a game,” Isaac responded, his voice serious, sounding like the person that I knew, one that I would never underestimate.

“You’re right. It’s not. It involves my family,” I said, not allowing the anger to enter my voice, but knowing I didn’t have to.

“Of course, we’ve heard the rumors, and I hope our meeting assuaged your concerns. I also trust the trouble has been resolved satisfactorily?” he said.

“And if it has?” I responded.

“That would be best for everyone. You know how these things are.” I could practically hear him shrug over the phone, though I didn’t buy his attempt at nonchalance.

“People get involved in things they shouldn’t, take steps that they might regret. It’s messy, unfortunate business, but not something I would expect to happen too often,” he said.

“Or ever again?” I said.

“One would hope not if they believed in such a thing,” Isaac answered.

“Isaac,” Elias said.

“Yes, Elias?” Isaac responded, his voice coming out strong over the phone line.

“If the Sargsyans were involved in this, there will be consequences,” Elias said.

“Well, I would think you would consider a satisfactory resolution of these troubles before you overreact,” Isaac said.

“I’ll be in touch,” Elias said by way of answer before he disconnected the call.

I looked at Elias, rage threatening to undo me.

“The Sargsyans were behind this. They backed Raphael,” I said.

“So it seems,” Elias responded.

“You don’t sound convinced,” I pointed out.

“I’m not,” he said.

“Isaac brought them back,” I pointed out.

Elias shrugged. “His attempt to stave off war, one that might blow back on him.”

“So you think this was a defensive move?” I said.

“It could be. Isaac might be trying to protect interests unrelated to us,” Elias said.

Through my anger, I could see some logic behind that. “It’s possible,” I said, annoyed that we didn’t have a definitive answer but trying to keep myself from latching on to what might be easy.

“Still…” Elias said.
