I stood, dressed, and then left. Stopped to look in on Crystal, feeling that same familiar kick in my chest at the sight of her.

And then I left, entering the living room just as Elias walked through the door.

“How are they?” he asked.

“Fine,” I responded.

He nodded his head, and I followed him out of the apartment and into the hall.

We crossed the hallway and went to another apartment that had a similar layout but couldn’t have been more different than the place we had just left.

It was sparsely furnished, almost empty, really, but this wasn’t a place designed for living.

It was a place designed for working, and right now my work—our work—was tracking down who was behind this.

“Have you told her about our visitor?” Elias asked.

“Not yet,” I responded.

The issue of Amethyst’s mother was another thing we’d have to deal with, but first things first.

“Did you talk to Isaac?” I asked.

“No. I wanted to wait until I got more information and talked to you.”

He tapped a picture that lay on one of the desks. “This was where they were being held,” he said.

“What did you find?”

“Nothing. The entire building had an unfortunate electrical malfunction. There was nothing left but ash when we got there.”

“What a coincidence. So what then?” I asked.

“I looked at some satellite images, and there seemed to be traffic there, a little bit heavier than usual, about two weeks ago.”

“So Raphael didn’t plan this on the fly,” I said.

“No. And he definitely doesn’t have access to the kind of personnel who could put this together.”

“I think it’s about time we call Isaac, don’t you?” I said.

He nodded then pulled out his phone.

I was surprised when the call was answered on the first ring.

“Elias and Davit, I presume?” he said before either of us could speak. “To what do I owe the honor?”

“You answered the phone quickly, Isaac. Is there a reason why?” I responded.

“It’s been a while since I’ve heard from my friends. Maybe I was eager to hear your voices?” he said.

“And what made you think it was us?” Elias asked.

“A hunch,” Isaac responded.

“Isaac, is there something you want to tell me?” Elias asked, his face all business and his voice the same.

“No. Is there something I should want to tell you?”
