Pretty near me, actually.

“Which one’s your building?”

She points to it. Two-hundred metres away.

“We’ve got some time,” I tell her and she peers over at me, saying nothing.

How much time do we really have? I don’t think either of us knows anymore.

“Are you liking not living at home?” I ask her just to fill the silence.

She pinches her finger mindlessly. She’s nervous. “I haven’t lived at home for over a year.”

“Right.” I nod. “Do you like it here?”

“I like living with the girls,” she tells me.

“You and Taura, it’s nice.” I flash her a quick smile. “Glad you’ve got her.”

“Me too,” she says as she walks up one of her front steps.

“This you then?”

She nods.

“We’ll have to come visit some time.”

Her face looks strained. “We?”

I tilt my head, swallow. I give her a shrug, that’s all. I don’t know what else I can give her yet.

“Can I walk you up?” I ask her and her eyes go round as she nods without looking at me. She turns on her heel and walks ahead of me quickly.

I don’t know what I’m doing, I think to myself as she pushes the lift up.

I know what I want to be doing. Her and me in the lift — we’ve done it before. My hands on her hair and up her dress.

She gets out of the lift and walks to her door, standing in front of it like a guard.

“So, I lied before,” I tell her, my hands still in my pockets.

“Oh?” She gives me a nervous look.

“I did get you a present.” Her face lightens. “Me and Jordan were in a pawn shop the other day,” I tell her.

She gives me a look. “Awful. Why?”

“P-a-w-n not p-o-r-n.”

Her face doesn’t change and I try not to laugh.

“Still why?”

“Because Jordan collects vintage jewellery—”

Magnolia pulls a face.

“Anyway—” I give her a look. “I found this.”
