It’s a scariness I love because me in danger has always been catnip for BJ. He can’t help it. It happens kind of subconsciously, I think, like a reflex. As soon as I’m in there, he’s hovering behind me.

I glance back at him; our eyes catch in the dark.

He says nothing, does nothing. Just stands there with me.

I walk in deeper, wanting to test him, see how far I can go with him. He follows me in, sticks closer.

Close enough that I can feel the warmth of him behind me.

I move around and he follows me like a shadow.

“Careful,” he tells me in his low voice. “I can’t see for shit—”

And then from right in front of us, someone makes the sound of a ghoul. I scream and BJ grabs me from behind, pulling me back into him. Jonah starts cackling and Taura’s laughing too, but we’re not.

My face is buried in my ex-boyfriend’s chest with his arms wrapped around me. His heart’s beating against my face. He’s not letting go, so I’m not letting go. He shifts a tiny bit so his chin’s sitting on top of my head.

He swallows.

“Sorry,” he tells me, but he doesn’t move.

“You ready to go, Romeo?” Jonah calls from somewhere in the darkness and I swear to god BJ’s grip tightens around me, just for a second, and then he lets go.

“Yep,” he calls and then walks ahead of me.

He pulls out his iPhone to light the way, but rushes up ahead to Jonah.

Taura grabs my arm, keeping me back.

“What was that?” She blinks, mouth cracked open, a little hopeful.

I give her a long look and shake my head, because I have no idea.
