I walk as quick as I can to get out in front of Parks and to Jonah.
I give him a look, nodding him out of the burial tomb.
“Quick,” I whisper, eyes wide, ushering him towards the car.
“What?” He frowns.
I look past him. The girls aren’t out yet, I think they’re taking photos.
“I don’t want to go,” I whisper.
“What?” He frowns more.
“I don’t want to go. I don’t want to go,” I tell him, urgent, shaking my head.
He looks confused. “You want to stay here?”
“No.” I growl. “I don’t want to go home...” To Jordan, is the part I can’t say out loud though, not without being a colossal wanker, so I let it hang and give him a look.
He tilts his head at me, brows low. “Beej…”
“Please — please. I fucked up, Jo.” Shake my head. “I need to fix it.”
I look past him again, back into the tomb. I can see the light of a phone coming out.
“Fuck. Please,” I whisper. I’m panicked now, about to lose it. “Shit! Jo, do something.” I shove him. “Do something.”
He makes an annoyed sound, looks over his shoulder, moves around me, grabs a switchblade out from his pocket and slashes his tyre.
“This car’s a week and a half old,” he says with a glare.
I shake my head at him. “What the fuck do you have a switchblade in your pocket for?”
“Because my best friend’s a fucking idiot,” he says through clenched teeth and then he shoves it back into his pocket right as the girls walk up.
“What’s wrong?” Taura looks down at Jo on the ground who sighs, rolls his eyes, hamming it up.
“Busted tyre.”
“Oh, shit.” She frowns and moves towards him. “Do you have a spare?”
Fuck.
Jo and I trade looks.
“Yes…” Jo nods, thinking on his feet. “But… that’s… busted too.”
Magnolia looks at him, confused. “Didn’t you get this car like, a week ago?”
“Yeah.” Jo nods coolly. “But I took it off-roading.”
“Over Christmas?” Parks puts her hand on her hips.
“Yep.” Jo keeps nodding.
