“Shut up—” He gives me a look. “That kind of thinking, Magnolia — it fucks people up. It’s all wrapped up in his self-worth now. Do good to get good. He did shit and he’s scared he’s gonna get shit. He can’t help it. But people are people, and people hurt people—” He shrugs again. “It’s just the nature of being human. We fuck up.”

I give him a sad look.

“And his issue—” Julian gives me a look. “It’s your fault, Parks.” I pull back a little, offended, but he ignores me and keeps going. “You’ve got that thing about you that makes you want to be different or better.” Julian shrugs a bit, all hopeless. “He’s just trying to be good enough for you or some shit.”

“He said that,” I tell Julian quietly. “That I look at him like he’s not good enough for me.”

Julian tosses an arm around me and sniffs.

“Well, that is complete horse shit. You look at him like he’s Michael fucking Angelo.” He shakes his head. “He doesn’t feel good enough for you, that’s all that is.”

“Oh, that’s all, is it?” I give him a look.

“Yep.” Julian nudges me as he lifts me up into his car. “Joke’s on him, though. Little does he know how much you enjoy a bad boy.”

I roll my eyes. “You’re not a bad boy, Julian.”

He scoffs.

“You’re not—” I shake my head at him. “It’s your greatest rouse.”

I give him a defiant look and he gives me a pinched one.

Then he sniffs and looks out the window and I hope he knows I’m right, because I’m very sure that I am.
