Jo gives me an exasperated look. “How do you know that?”

“Because I’m going to make her.”

Jonah presses his hands into his eyes, breathes out tired and makes a frustrated grunt. Shakes his head then turns to his driver.

“Change of plans. Grosvenor’s Square, mate.”

When we pull up outside the girls’ place, Jo gets out first and looks around. Checking for other armed cars, any of Jules boys he recognises. He shakes his head at me, cocks it towards the door.

He calls Taura, checks Jules isn’t there then we take the lift up.

Hate that I’ve not been here before, hate that it took me this to come here.

Taura lets us in, gives me a little kiss on the cheek as she does.

“Proud of you,” she tells me.

I peer around for her. “Where is she? Is she okay?”

Tausie nods her chin towards a room down the hall. “Ask her yourself.”

I follow the sound of a raging Bridget down the hall.

“—Pricky bastard!” Bridget yells, stomping her foot. “Slimy, repugnant—” Sees me. “Oh.” She blinks. “I wasn’t talking about you, believe it or not.”

I sniff a laugh. “For once.”

Parks looks up from her bed, eyes wide. They’re dangerous tonight, all red and extra green. She stands up quickly.

Bridget glances between us then backs out, closing the door behind her.

“Are you okay?” I ask her, not moving.

She rushes over to me, holds my face in her hands and moves my head around, inspecting it. “Are you?”

Split lip, bit of a black eye, cut up cheek, bloody nose.

“Come on—” She takes me by the wrist, pulls me to her bathroom.

Wets a face cloth with warm water and starts clearing the blood from my face.

Fuck, I love being close to her.

Her eyes won’t meet mine. It’s on purpose. She’s gone shy on me.

We’re as close as we’ve been in months — our faces not even centimetres apart — and she won’t look me in the eye. She inspects the cut on my cheek.

“That looks quite bad,” she tells me.

I shake my head, watching her eyes, waiting for them to find mine.

“It needs a stitch, I think.”

“Don’t want a stitch.”

“It’ll scar.”

I duck my head so our eyes catch. “Worth it.”
