When we finally pull up outside of Ally’s trailer, Micah stops, but doesn’t turn off the engine.

Ally appears at the doorway and when she sees us, her eyes go wide, and a devious smile appears on her face. Rolling my eyes, I quickly open the door of the car.

“Hey, let me have your number,” Micah says, snagging my phone out of my hand.

I didn’t expect him to ask, nor to steal my phone. Ally comes toward us, and I hear her whistle.

“Wow, nice car!” she admires.

I turn and glare at her, mouthing for her to shut up. Ally only laughs though. When Micah is finished, he hands me back my phone.

“Thanks for the ride,” I say, and then close the door.

Micah smiles and then drives away. Ally and I stand side-by-side as we watch his taillights fade away. Once the Range Rover is out of sight, Ally smacks me in the arm.

“I believe you have a LOT to tell me,” she says, grabbing my hand and leading me toward her trailer.

We walk inside and head straight for her bedroom. Unlike my trailer, Ally’s is clean and feels warm and inviting. She and her mom may not have a lot, but they keep a nice home and I always like staying here. Sadly, Ally’s mom works a lot, so she isn’t home right now. She works late shifts at a small diner and I commend her for doing everything she can to take care of Ally.

Ally flops down on her twin bed and eyes me. “Alright, spill it.”

I lay down beside her. There isn’t a lot of room, but it’s still comfortable. “There really isn’t much to tell. Lucas was being a dick, as usual, and even after I gave him the money for rent, he wanted more. Micah just showed up and surprised both of us,” I said.

“Wow, I think he likes you,” Ally giggles.

“No way. If anything, he feels bad for me. He’s rich and can have any girl he wants. I doubt the girl from the trailer park is his type,” I say, and the words sting me.

“Stella, the way he was looking at you tonight, that isn’t pity—that was lust. Besides, a guy just doesn’t show up to save a girl that he doesn’t have feelings for,” Ally says, turning to face me.

I pull the faded My Little Pony bedspread up to cover my body. Ally has had this thing since we were five-years-old. It was a gift from Santa, and I remembered being so jealous that Santa brought her presents. I always thought that I was bad, and that’s why I didn’t get anything. Now, I know it’s because my mom was probably passed out or didn’t have money for presents because she blew it on drugs and booze. This blanket reminds me of a time before I knew the horrors of the world. Before I was drawn into anger and had to choose survival over happiness.

“Either way, it doesn’t matter. We come from different worlds, so it would never work,” I say, rolling over and closing my eyes.

Thankfully, Ally takes the hint and grows quiet. I hear her scrolling through TikTok, but she doesn’t say anything else. As I fall into a deep slumber, I can’t get Micah’s face out of my mind.
