Micah

“Dude,youjustshotme,” Talon yells out.

Shaking my head, I focus my eyes back on the television screen and notice that I just took out Talon’s character in our video game.

“Shit. Sorry, dude,” I say, throwing my controller next to me on the sofa.

Talon shakes his head at me. “We are on the same team. We were winning,” he shouts, throwing his controller across the room.

I watch as it slams against the wall and breaks into a million little pieces. It’s nothing around here for us to be screaming and cursing at one another.

“Where is your head at, Micah?” Talon asks me.

Rubbing my eyes, I don’t even try to mask my emotions right now. The guys can already tell when something is up with me, and Talon is relentless. He would push me until I told him anyway.

“Remember when I told you about that crazy chick from the race the other night,” I begin.

Talon raises his eyes at me. “Don’t tell me you fucked her and now she’s going all stalker on you,” he states wildly.

Men in the mafia always sleep around-- at least until they are married. Most Capo’s have a goomah; a mistress or two on the side, but not the Antoni Mafia Family men. We believe in settling down with only one woman once we get married. So, for most men in the mafia, having a few crazy bitches that linger around is normal.

Gabby steps into the room, her Louis Vuitton shoes slapping against the hardwood floor. She rolls her eyes at us like we are nothing but mere children.

“So, what did I miss?” Gabby asks, plopping down next to me on the sofa. She is wearing a skin-tight black dress and blood red lipstick. She looks like she’s about to go party and not ready for a Sunday dinner with the family. We all stare back at her and she just raises her eyes in confusion. “What?”

“Well, we were sort of having a conversation,” I say, looking between Talon and Gabby.

“Oh, please,” Gabby says, waving my words away. “I heard enough to know that you have some crazy girl after you,” she states with a sneer.

Grunting, I run a hand through my hair in agitation. “That’s not what I was saying. I was about to tell Talon that the girl, Stella, got into some trouble and I helped her out. But...” the words hang heavy in the air as I struggle how to finish my sentence.

Gabby stares at me, refusing to look away as she attempts to read me. Talon waits, an unsure look on his serious face.

“What kind of trouble?” Talon finally asks.

Talon has very little patience for my antics, and I know he’s trying to figure out if he needs to intervene or not.

“She doesn’t have anyone to help her. She doesn’t have parents or any family. She pays the rent on some piece of shit trailer just to have a place to live. Her landlord is this pervert who is taking advantage of her and making her pay more money on her rent. I feel like I need to help her out,” I finally admit.

Gabby falls back against the leather sofa cushion and Talon whistles as he slaps his hands together.

“I never thought I’d see the day that Micah grows up and realizes that the world doesn’t solely revolve around him,” Talon bristles.

“Shut up,” I growl out.

I know he’s messing with me, but at the same time, he’s right. I’ve never cared about other people outside of my circle of friends and family. However, when it comes to Stella, I have this insane, animalistic need—no desire-- to protect her. I know that no one will understand it, but I have to help her, if only to ensure she’s safe.

“So, what are you going to do?” Gabby asks.

Unlike Talon, Gabby seems genuinely interested in this strange situation that I have found myself in. Gabby tends to keep to herself and out of all of us, she’s the most secretive and holds her own secrets close.

Shaking my head, I sigh. “I don’t really know yet, but I will figure it out,” I say.

“Everyone needs to meet in the dining room,” I hear yelled up to us.

Chance, Talon’s dad yells up the stairs to us. We always have Sunday dinner together and then after, the men and women of the mafia meet behind closed doors. It’s tradition and in the mafia, you never break tradition.
