I let out a small sigh.“As well as can be expected, I guess.Other than the fact she refuses to talk about it.She continues on as though everything is fine.I’ve stopped bringing it up, because any time I do, it leads to an argument. We both act like it never happened, which feels wrong to me.”

“Did I ever tell you about the time I had a miscarriage?”My mother’s voice was quiet and a bit sad.

I jerked a bit in surprise.“What?When?”

“You were only a couple years old.I hadn’t even been that far along, still early in my first trimester.Your father and I were devastated.I wouldn’t talk about it at first, either, but he was patient with me.Letting me work through my grief in my own way.It got better, but it was difficult at first.Just keep being there for Livvie, and when she’s ready, you can grieve together.”

“Thanks, Mom.I’ve never felt so helpless in my life.I know how much Livvie wanted a big family, since it was something she never had.”

“Just remember that family doesn’t have to be about blood,” she squeezed my arm and then looped her hand around it to pull me farther into the house.“It’s about love.”

We joined my father, Livvie, and Chloe in the kitchen.Twenty minutes later, after enjoying our early Christmas treats, we said goodbye.

“Be good for Nana and Papa,” I squatted down to give my daughter a hug.“Don’t forget to ask to make snow cream if it ends up snowing while you’re here. And I know you brought all your books, but spend time doing other things, too.Go outside and play for a bit.Get some fresh air.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

“I love you,” I told her.

“Love you, too.”

Livvie got her hug and kiss goodbye, and then we were out the door.A brief flash of sadness crossed her face, but she quickly smothered it.I held my tongue, because it wasn’t the time to bring it up.Not while we were on our way to Eden.
