Chapter 13- Alana

Something isn’t right as the sunlight warms my skin. The warm rays are pleasant, but a tingling radiates through me, from my fingertips to my toes. I pull myself up, and the sting of my newly-acquired burn makes me wince.

I can’t help but immediately wonder how bad it is. I raise my fingers and stroke along the flame marks on the center of my neck. They’re crinkly under my touch, and they’ve been soaked in some sort of salve.

“Ah!”

The door to my bedroom swings open, and Kim is standing in front of me. Her smile widens as relief colors her features. She launches herself towards me and wraps her arms around me.

“Oh my God, Alana. Alana, you’re really okay.”

My memories shift in my head like puzzle pieces slowly coming together. Wesley was here. And now Kim is here.

I set my hand on the back of my hand on my head and say, “Where’s Wesley?”

Kim pulls away from me and winces. “Well, he uh- “

Fear settles in the pit of my stomach. “Kim, where is he?!”

The last thing I remember is him threading his fingers through my hair. He told me not to worry about something.

“He went off on his own. He didn’t want to lose any progress on the hunt.”

My muscles ache as I swing my legs over the side of the bed. “He left without help?”

Kim acts a rock as I pull myself up. “Yes, I’m starting to learn that you can’t talk that one out of anything.”

“Yes, me too.”

I get to my feet on my own and walk over to my dresser. “I need fresh clothes.”

Kim chuckles and her voice is laced with confusion and concern. “For what? Allow yourself to be smelly while you stay in bed.”

“I’m not staying in bed.”

She’s quiet for a moment before she says, “Then what are you doing?”

I turn to her and fix her with a stony stare.

“I’m going after him.”
