Page 25 of Her Arrival

I watch as she lumbers out of the cabin and shuts the door behind her. I sit on the edge of her bed. Before I can stop myself, I’m threading my fingers through her hair.

Her face crumples as she opens her eyes. Her hand flies to the burn in the middle of her chest and she gasps. The mark extends to her neck, mimicking the flames that threatened to consume her.

Alana’s eyes slide over to me and she wheezes, “Wesley?”

I shift so that I can set her head in my lap. I nod and say, “I’m here.”

She breathes deep then says, “How long was I out?”

“A few hours. The healer said that you’ll be down for a couple of days.”

She sighs. “Makes sense. I was really hoping to continue the search.” She narrows her eyes, “I don’t know how many girls will go missing while I’m out of commission.”

I set my index finger against her pillowy soft lips. “Don’t worry about that.”

I will take care of it. The pack leaders can sit on their hands if they want, but I’m not going to let Alana’s concerns go unheard. Not like the rest of these people.

She sinks deeper into the bed. “I’m tired now.”

“Rest. I’ll be back before long.”

I consider it for a moment, then I lean forward and press my lips against her forehead. I step out of her bedroom, then I leave the cabin. I gently shut the door behind me.

I’m walking back to my cabin when I spot the soft glow of the pack leaders’ cabin. I step forward and raise the back of my hand to knock.

“You’re not going to get very far with them.”

Kim’s voice is sobering. It pulls me away from my rage.

I turn and say, “What do you think I should do?”

“Convince them. This is about going after the girls, right? Because Alana would want to make progress.”

I let the stillness sit between us before I say, “Yes.”

Kim chuckles and says, “I guess you’re just going to go.”

I smirk and say, “Look at you. You know me better than I thought after all.”

I whip around and I transform. Kim nods, seemingly in approval, as I take off.

The angle of the moon in the sky tells me that its almost midnight by the time I make it to Cosmos. I make myself invisible, weaving through the townsfolk as I move through the town. People like Annetta are counting on us to figure this out.

I’m in and out of the town in a flash, and I’m walking in the woods in my human form when I hear a soft whine.

I can’t miss an opportunity.

I take off on foot, the wind whips against my skin as I pump my human legs forward, because if there’s something that is taking girls out in here, it can’t hear wolves coming towards them.

Then, I see it.

The thin glow of the firelight. Women are lying lamely on the ground.

My breath catches in my throat. We might have found some of them.

A massive black wolf descends upon them. It’s bigger than me; it’s bigger than any werewolf I’ve ever seen.

I feel a slight tremble in my muscles as it turns its gaze on me.

I remember where I am, and who I am. “Who are you?!”

The wolf transforms, and instead of a massive black wolf, a seven-foot tall, lithe man stands in front of me. His eyes are dark and dazed, but I can’t help but feel he’s in complete control of what’s going on.

He curls his lips into a wolfish smile and the sound of his voice rattles my ribcage as he exhales.

“Nolan.”
