Laura opened her mouth to ask, then stopped because it was none of her business.
“Didn’t Eagle tell you what he did before inheriting this place?”
She shook her head.
“The six of us: me, Cap, Eagle, Nails, Cash, and Tech were all Army Rangers. We all got out last year. Eagle inherited this place, so we came here.”
“Wow, that’s… thank you for your service.”
Rafe studied her for a second before nodding. He cleared his throat, obviously uncomfortable with the sentiment.
“I’m going to head out,” he said without looking at her. “Enjoy your lunch.”
“Why do they call you Sunny?” she asked unable to help wanting to know.
He met her eyes before smirking. “Because I’m a ray of sunshine, of course,” he said with sarcasm dripping from his voice
She watched him leave, uncomfortable with the slight hollow feeling that seeing him walk away left inside her.
