Sunny found Eagle leaving the cabin after he dropped off lunch for Laura. He wanted to get this out of the way. Eagle smiled at him.

“Hey, Sunny, all done for the day?”

“Almost,” he said.

Eagle frowned. “What do you have left? I can take care of it. You need to get some rest.”

“I will. I ah…I need to talk to you about something first.”

Eagle stopped and turned to him. “Everything alright? Is it your dad?”

Sunny jerked but shook his head. “No, nothing to do with him. I just…” He trailed off and scrubbed a hand over his face. There was no good way to say this.

“I slept with Laura.”

Eagle blinked at him several times before frowning. “When?”

“In Vegas.”

Eagle cut his eyes toward the barn. “You met her at a club? Weird I didn’t get a submissive vibe from her. I guess you can’t always tell.”

Sunny shook his head. “She’s not a sub. It was a different kind of encounter.”

“So you’re what?”

“We’re nothing. It was just a weekend together.”

“And you’re telling me because?”

Sunny sighed in frustration. “Because it’s the right thing to do. I’m doing my best not to make her uncomfortable, but it’s kind of awkward, you know?”

Eagle snorted. “Man, I married a woman for money.”

“Yeah, but that worked out. You two are so in love now it’s sickening.”

Eagle’s answering smile was sappy as hell. “Yes, we are. Is there a possibility you and Laura could—”

“No,” Sunny said, cutting him off.

The shock on Eagle’s face made him backtrack. “We barely even know each other and her being my boss means that would be a really bad idea.”

Eagle’s face softened. “I get that, but this isn’t exactly corporate America. We can make, break, and bend our own rules out here as we need to. Especially if it’s something that could make you both happy. I’d love that for you.”

Sunny really didn’t want to get into everything right now about why that was never going to happen, so he just shook his head.

“Her and I talk and we’re just going to try to be friends.”

Eagle clapped him on the shoulder. “If that’s what you want man, fine. But…”

“But nothing. It’s the way it has to be. I’m going to go get some sleep now, ok?”

“Ok.”

Sunny turned and walked away feeling even more conflicted. Hedidn’twant a relationship. So why did Eagle telling him they could figure it out make him want to go find Laura right this minute?

Lust. Pure and simple. There was nothing else. There couldn’t be, he wasn’t built for it.
