“What happened?” he croaked after drinking.

“You passed out on the way into town. They’ve been doing blood work and imaging. Dr. Durst is looking over everything to make sure you don’t need further medical treatment.”

Sunny mulled that over, then two things occurred to him. “How do you know all this, and did I imagine it or is Tori Durst here?”

Laura pursed her lips and then sighed. “You told them I was your fiancée when we arrived so they’ve been letting me make decisions for you, and yes Dr. Durst is here. Who is she?”

“Cash’s sister. He must not know she’s here, though.”

“Why wouldn’t she tell her brother she’s in town?”

Sunny could think of a few reasons but went for the simplest. “Because Tori does what she wants, when she wants.”

Laura snorted. “I gathered that much.”

“Well, well, well, if our little ray of sunshine isn’t awake!” he heard Tori say from across the room.

“What’s going on Tor? Am I dying?” he croaked and Laura got him more water. His bed moved, and he stifled another groan. It stopped when he was in a reclining position, now able to see both women more easily.

“You? The happiest Ranger ever? Die from a bump on the head?” She shook her head and laughter danced in her eyes. “I don’t think so.”

“Good, when can we go home then?” he said, remembering to keep up the fiancée ruse. It was easier for now, though he was sure it would cause some questions later since Tori would talk to her brother, eventually.

“Soon. As long as your… fiancée will be staying with you for at least the next forty-eight hours and you promise to stay in bed for several more days after that.”

“Tor—”

“No arguments, soldier. You’ve got a nasty concussion. No bleeding in your brain, though.”

“I’m fine then. What should I take for pain?”

Tori stared hard at him. “Alternate Tylenol and Ibuprofen at home. Use ice on the back of your head when you need to. And I’m serious. You need to take it easy. This isn’t the army.”

“No, shit? I wonder why someone was shooting at us then?”

Tori’s eyes went wide. “This happened because someone shot at you? Why?”

Sunny glanced sideways at Laura. “That didn’t seem relevant to the conversation before,” she said, and he had to smile at that. Laura shrugged. “They have some idea, but you’ll have to ask Cap or Eli.”

“Oh, you can bet I will. And I’ll be giving them the same orders I gave you.”

Sunny scowled at her. “Whatever you say, Dr. Durst Just get me out of here. This bed sucks.”

Tori just shook her head. “Alright, it’ll probably take another half hour, but I’ll get your paperwork around.”

“If you really love this idiot, then I suggest you try to make him keep a low profile for a few days.”

“If you know him as well as you say you do, then you know how impossible that probably is.”

“Touche. I’ll be back soon.”

Laura’s eyes looked anywhere but at him. He didn’t blame her, he’d put her in an impossible position.

“I’m sorry,” he said, and that got her attention.

“What?”

“I said I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to put you in such a tough position.”
