She narrowed her eyes. “I’m fine. You’re the one who’s hurt.”

“I meant telling them you were my fiancée,” he said, rolling his eyes.

“Oh, that. It’s fine. Though if that is your friend’s sister, you’ll have some explaining to do later.”

“It’ll be more than that,” he said with a rueful smile.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, Felton is a small town. Everyone in town will know what I said by sometime tomorrow. Even if they don’t know exactly who you are, they’ll know we’re getting married.”

“But we’re not,” she said, her voice filled with horror, her eyes wide with shock.

“I know that, Freckles. It will just take some time to convince everyone of that.”

She buried her head in her hands, and Sunny frowned. Was the idea of people even thinking about the two of them together that awful? Ouch. Though, since he didn’t want it either he wasn’t sure why it mattered.

“Ok, this is fine. It’ll be fine. It’s not real and we don’t come to town much, anyway.”

A nurse entering the room interrupted them.

“Mr. Gaskell, I have your discharge papers. Do you want to sit up and sign them or…” She trailed off, glancing at Laura, who blushed the most gorgeous shade of pink that Rafe couldn’t help remembering times he had seen that flush on the rest of her body.

Good thing he was in so much pain or this might have gotten really awkward. Where were his clothes, anyway?

“Laura can do it. Where are my clothes?”

“I have them here,” Laura said, pointing to the table next to her.

He watched as she signed enough paperwork to buy a fucking car. “I’ll leave you to get dressed. Dr. Durst said not to leave until she gets back, though. She wants to talk to you some more.”

If he’d thought she was blushing before, it was nothing compared to the near tomato color Laura’s face sported now. She put the folder of paperwork on the table and stood as the door shut behind the nurse. Picking up the clothes, she set them on the bed beside him.

“I’ll turn around—”

“No,” he said too fast, and she started.

“I mean, I don’t think I can stand up on my own just yet. I’ll need your help.”

Her mouth opened and closed several times like she wanted to say something but couldn’t quite figure out what or how.

“But I can’t—”

“Why not? It’s not like you haven’t seen me naked before.”

She froze, her eyes trailing down his body, before she nodded her head slowly.

Sunny used the side rails to pull himself the rest of the way to sitting and then brought each leg over. His head spun as he sat on the edge of the bed and then Laura was there, her hands on his shoulders.

“I’ve got you,” she said, her voice low and husky. He knew it could get even lower when she was close to the edge, but he loved her voice even without that tinge of desire. Nope. He needed to stop that line of thought right fucking now.

“Thanks,” he said, trying to smile, but having trouble through the pain and dizziness. They waited there, heads close, for several minutes, until he felt like he was steady.

On impulse, he leaned in and pressed a kiss to her cheek. “Thank you, Laura.”

“I, uh… you… uh… you’re welcome,” she finally stammered.

“I think I can balance here. Can you get my socks and jeans started, then you can help me stand?”
