A loud slurp and clinking got everyone’s attention as Timmy got busy, digging into his bowl.

“Yummy, huh?”Chase said.

Timmy looked up, bits of creamy dumpling clinging to the edge of his lips, and nodded.

After the meal, Katie and Mary washed the dishes.Chase offered to help, but they shooed him away.

He waited until they were done cleaning up before saying, “It’s Timmy’s bedtime.”

Timmy groaned.“Do we have to go?”

“I’m afraid so.You’ve got school tomorrow.”

“And Katie is leaving tomorrow,” Mary said, wiping her hands dry on the kitchen towel.

Chase raised his eyebrows.

“I’m catching a flight in the evening.I’ve got to get back to work,” Katie said.Her eyes met Chase’s, and a flicker passed between them.She looked away, her chin trembling.
