“Do you have a moment to talk with us about our mother?”Mary asked.

“Yes, the surgery went well. She’ll be experiencing pain after the anesthesia wears off.And there’ll be some swelling. We’ll be monitoring her condition here. When she goes home, she’s going to need someone there to help her.”

“Will she need to stay in bed?”Mary asked.

“No, it’s better to be active. The therapist will show her some exercises to do.”

“How long will it take for her to recover?”

“Each person is different.Your mother could take months or longer at her age.But proper care, a healthy diet, and exercise will help her recovery.”

“Thank you, Dr.Fallon,” both sisters said at the same time.

“The nurse will give her post-op care instructions and the number to call if she has questions.Be sure to do the follow-up appointments.”

“We will,” Mary said.“Thank you.”

After the doctor left, a timer beeped on Mary’s phone. She stared at it, covering her mouth with her hand and turning to Katie.“Oh no.I almost forgot.I need to take you to the airport now.”

“It’s okay.”

“But you’ll miss your flight.”

“I won’t be taking the flight.”

“You’re… not?”

“No, I’m not leaving.”

“But… what about your job?”

“I quit.”

Katie heard Jim gasp as Mary took a step back.

“The job was killing me, but I’ve cut out the cancer.”
