“Don’t get mad at us. We’re just the messengers,” Walker said.

“I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at myself for not seeing what was right in front of me and I’m furious at our father,” I said and stood up.

“Where do you think you’re going?” JD asked and stood in front of me.

“I’m going to talk to Dad. Where do you think I was going?” I asked.

Turning around, I reached to put on my jacket, but the world spun and I had to put my hand on the desk to steady myself.

“Do you think that’s wise? Shouldn’t you sober up a little bit first?” Walker asked and put a hand on my shoulder.

“No. I don’t,” I said and glared at him.

“All right,” Walker said and stepped back.

I couldn’t tell if he was actually telling me, it was okay to go and talk to our father or if he knew that there was no way he would change my mind. I didn’t care which one it was, all I knew was that I needed to talk to our father, I needed some answers, and I wasn’t going to wait until I sobered up or another second before doing it.

Chapter 28

Hope

“What made you think you had a right to talk to Mac?” I yelled at Cole.

“Because you’re my sister and I want what is best for you. Obviously,” Cole said and rolled his eyes at me.

“Did you just roll your eyes at me? How dare you!” I yelled.

“Love, don’t roll your eyes at my sister,” Faith said, calmly.

We were sitting in their living room after I had come charging into Faith and Cole’s house demanding I talk to him. Luckily, Mary was already in bed and Cole seemed to know exactly why I had come over to their house to yell at him.

“I don’t see what the big deal is. You were going to tell him, I just got to him sooner,” Cole said.

He walked over and poured himself another helping of Scotch and topped off the cup of tea Faith was drinking. I was gripping an untouched glass of wine that Faith had poured for me as soon as I walked in the door.

“It wasn’t for you to say. It wasn’t for you to do. How dare you try to control my life!” I yelled at him.

“I wasn’t trying to control your life. I was just looking out for you. I care about you; I was worried about you. I wasn’t sure what Mac’s intentions were,” Cole said.

“Intentions? Did you really just use that word?” Faith asked with a laugh.

“Yes, intentions. His family doesn’t have the most stellar of reputations,” he said.

“You of all people should know not to judge a man by his brothers,” Faith replied.

“Ryan’s happy no one ever did,” Cole said, mentioning his older brother.

“You shouldn’t be doing it either. Mac is certainly not JD and Hope is right, you shouldn’t have gotten involved. At least not without talking to me,” Faith said.

“What would you have done?” I asked.

“I might have talked to him instead. I would have told him what was going on. But,” Faith said when I started to protest, “I would have told him how conflicted you were about going and suggested he help you make a decision, not push you into one.”

“You would have wanted to make the decision for me as well,” I said.

“No. I would have been helping you make a decision. I would want you to have all the facts, including how Mac feels about you. Which I know you were confused about.”

“It was for me to tell him. Not either of you,” I said.
