“Were you going to? It had been days and you hadn’t. I think Cole did a great job waiting to talk to Mac. He should be commended for his patience,” Faith said.

“Thank you, love,” Cole said and smiled at Faith.

“I thought you would be on my side. I thought you would be mad at Cole, like I am,” I said.

“Don’t worry. I’m mad at Cole, but I’m not as mad as you are at him or at Mac,” Faith retorted.

“Mac has nothing to do with this,” I said.

“Does she honestly believe that or is she just trying to convince us?” Cole asked Faith.

“I’m getting the impression she thinks this has nothing to do with Mac,” Faith said in a loud whisper to Cole and smiled at him.

“Stop making fun of me,” I said and pouted.

I knew I sounded like a spoiled kid, but I didn’t care. Faith and Cole had been best friends since they were little and there were times when they would tease me like that when we were younger. I hadn’t liked it then and I liked it even less now. It only showed how close they were and how they belonged together.

“Oh, sweetie. We aren’t. You aren’t mad at Cole, at least not really. It’s Mac and even yourself you’re upset with,” Faith stated.

“Exactly,” Cole said.

“Oh, I’m mad at you. I’m definitely mad at you. What made you decide it was okay to go and talk to my boyfriend and blow up my life like that?” I asked.

“Boyfriend. Did you call him your boyfriend? You never have before,” Faith said.

“I’m sleeping with him. Of course, he’s my boyfriend,” I spat.

“Did you tell him that? Did you two figure that out?” Cole asked.

“Don’t change the subject. We were talking about you sabotaging my relationship,” I said.

“It looks like you did that just fine on your own,” Cole said under his breath.

“COLE!” Faith said.

“What? I’m speaking from experience. When you find someone that’s incredible, that you get along with, that you like sleeping with, and more importantly, you like waking up next to, then you should tell them. I had all that and I almost lost it. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Most especially one of my favorite people in the world. And that’s exactly what she did,” Cole said, pointing a finger at me.

“Oh, I’m your favorite person?” I asked, touched.

“I said one of,” Cole said and held up one finger. “It’s easy to see how much you care about Mac and he you. I just wanted to make sure he was doing right by you. I wanted to make sure he wasn’t dicking you around or being an idiot. Yes, I pushed his buttons, but I did it for you and his own good. Speaking from experience, I know that it’s easy to get caught up in your own insecurities and not see what’s right in front of you. I didn’t want that to happen to you, or to Mac,” Cole confessed.

“What do you mean how he feels? He doesn’t even know how he feels about me. He does know how he wants my life to be dictated and has no problem telling me what I should do with it. There was never any talk about feelings,” I said.

Faith leaned forward in her chair and looked intently at me as she said, “Hope, I thought it was obvious. Mac’s in love with you and has been for some time.”

I stared at Faith for a few moments. I heard what she said but I couldn’t comprehend it and I thought for sure I had heard her wrong. There was no way that Mac was in love with me, or that he had been for some time.

“You’re wrong,” I said softly and shook my head.

“Oh, yes he is,” Cole said with a chuckle, and I let out a shocked cry.

“Cole is laughing at himself, not at you. He’s seeing himself in Mac, and I kind of see myself in you,” Faith said.

“We are nothing like you and Cole. You two were perfect for each other from the start, even when you were kids. Mac and I aren’t like that, at all.”

“You kind of are. You two were right for each other from the beginning. We could see it; Mac could see it. You’re just afraid to see it,” Faith said.

“Then why didn’t he ever try to ask me out all those years ago. Why did it take me being around another guy for him to do anything?” I asked.
