Chapter Fourteen

The bed I woke in wasn’t mine. Neither were the pillows.

As for the woman slumbering behind me?

I took a deep breath, delighting in Kate’s sweet scent which was a mix of peaches, cinnamon, and cloves. What happened last night?I wondered as Kate curled up beneath the covers. The last thing I remembered was the concert and the drive home.

Had I fallen asleep? Maybe I passed out. No doubt my folks would throw a fit once I went home, but–

Oh.My heart sank as the memories of last night flooded my mind.Oh no.

Nausea climbed up my throat, which I quickly fought back down. I couldn’t freak out now. I had to get out. Away from Kate and my father’s bitter scent which lingered at the top of the stairs.

I didn’t mean it.My hands shook as I held my half of the blankets around me.It wasn’t supposed to happen.

Going against my dad. Turning in front of Kate.

None of it.

Heart racing, I threw off the covers and immediately wished I hadn’t. Blood pooled against my temples, causing them to throb as the room swung around me in wide circles. Wincing as much from the movement as the discomfort in my head, I managed to take a handful of slow even breaths, then tried again.

Cool air kissed my skin, making me painfully aware of just how naked I was.

Lost somewhere between dreams and waking, I’d completely forgotten about what happens after a shift. I’d turned into a wolf. I’d stepped out of my clothes. Clothes that, given my fuzzy memory, could’ve been anywhere in the house.

The kitchen,I realized as I thought back to the night before. I’d changed in the kitchen, so unless Kate brought my things down here, I’d have to move.

Risking a glance behind me, I made sure Kate was still asleep, then carefully tucked my share of the blankets around her. Kate stirred but didn’t wake.

Relieved, I inched toward the edge of the bed, then froze when I felt something move behind me.

“Liv?”

My heart seized.

“Hey,” I said, keeping my voice low so only she would hear. “I’m just going to grab my things.”

Kate murmured something under her breath, then wrapped her hand around my wrist. “They’re over here,” she said while gesturing at the wall. “I brought them down with me before. Don’t you remember?”

“Sorry. My head’s a bit fuzzy. It’ll take me a moment to catch up.”

Kate shifted, then got up without ever letting go of my arm. “You were pretty out of it when I got back.” The mattress compressed beneath our combined weight. “You must’ve been exhausted.” She placed her hand on my shoulder, then gently kissed the nape of my neck.

My body trembled as much from her kiss as the cool air surrounding us.

“Some shifts are worse than others.” I swallowed around the hard lump in my throat and hoped the erratic beat of my heart wasn’t as noticeable to her as it was to me.

“Are you cold?” She wrapped an arm around me with her hand resting on my chest.

“A little. It happens a lot after a shift. Fluctuating temperatures.”

Kate reached behind her, grabbed the blankets, then wrapped them around us. “Better?” Her warm breath tickled the back of my ear.

“I should probably–”
