ChapterTwenty-Seven

Declan

The first partof the radio show had gone off without a hitch, with the band answering some general questions about how the band got together and what made them work so well together. Declan had explained that they were more than just a band, that they were a family and the bonds of friendship ran deep. He told the presenter that there was no frontman in the band, that they were all equal members, he just happened to have the best voice.

That had made everyone laugh and Declan kept glancing toward where Andi was standing on the other side of the glass, watching them. Someone said something to her and she grinned, nodding her head and the presenter started speaking again.

“And I believe that you also recently made a friend with everyone’s favourite rogue, Oli Scott. So much so that he’s announced Heartache Melody as his main support on tour later this year.”

“Oli’s been great and his writing process is amazing to see. I hope he doesn’t mind me saying but we are working on a track for the album and that track is gonna be kickass to play on tour.”

They chatted away about music for a while and then the presenter glanced over her shoulder and Andi flashed her a grin and a thumbs up.

“The entire country is wondering what you guys are doing for the August bank holiday?”

Declan hadn’t a clue what she was on about but Rhys grinned. “That depends if it’s the Irish bank holiday or the English one?”

The entire studio seemed to descend into silence as the presenter continued. “How would you fancy headlining the introducing stage at the Reading and Leeds festival?”

Declan felt like he had been hot by a two-by-four and was rendered speechless. There was a chorus of hell yeahs, and let’s go before they cut to commercial and they set up to perform.

“Did you know about Reading and Leeds?” He asked Rhys as he pulled the strap of his guitar over his head.

“Andi told me not to say anything until it was official. She only got the invite this morning. I can’t bloody wait. You sure you wanna do this song today?”

He glanced over his shoulder at Andi, then back to Rhys. “Ya, let’s go. Go big or go home, guys.”

Rhys bumped his fist against Declan’s before shrugging off his jacket and getting behind his keyboard. Jameson settled into his position, while Luna pulled back her hair off her face and flashed him the biggest smile he’d seen on her in weeks.

They got the countdown that they were going live again and the presenter introduced them. “If you are just joining us, you are about to hear something special from the band we just announced as headliners for the introducing stage at Reading and Leeds this year. Turn up your radios and prepare to be blown away. Over to you Declan.”

His heart felt like it was lodged in his throat as he opened his mouth. “Thanks for having us, folks, we are Heartache Melody and this is a song we only finished last week but will be the first single from our self-titled album. It’s called Rebel Heart and it’s a song about the girl who got away and still being in love with her even after all this time.”

He lifted his gaze to where Andi was standing, a hand over her mouth as he counted down from three to one and they let Luna have her moment. She pounded on the drums with a vicious beat that had his head moving and after her solo ended, Rhys joined in on the keyboard and soon after, he and Jameson let their fingers strike the strings and the song came together.

Now he just had to sing his heart out and make sure that Andi heard the sincerity in his voice.

“Nights spent under the stars,

I still only had eyes for you.

The girl with the rebel heart

And a fast pair of running shoes.”

Andi’s eyes widened, one hand still over her mouth and the other over her heart. His fingers fumbled over the strings and he slammed his eyes shut, swinging the guitar to his back and he just took the mic and poured all his pain, his guilt into the lyrics.

“I wish we could go back,

To when I didn’t make you cry,

When I almost got to call you mine,

Nights spent under darkened skies.

We got lost in lyrics and melody,

I got lost in your infectious smile,
