“Make sure the traitors are monitored,” I told Kier. He would have some of his guard take care of it and be at my back. I wouldn’t be facing Seran without my generals at my back.

Because if he hurt Raina, I was going to destroy him. There was no politics or bureaucracy or even honor that would stop me from avenging her.

By the time I reached the exit to the courtyard, Xian and Kier were at my back, with Radien and Wolfe waiting for us.

Radien must’ve called for Wolfe. He was injured and in pain, but the fury in his eyes was clear.

Seran was a fool to come here. There was no chance of him getting out of here alive when all of us were together. They hadn’t said that he brought an entire army with him.

Why would he come alone? What leverage did he think he had?

It actually gave me hope. If Raina were dead, there was no way that he’d take this chance.

All possible logic and reason escaped me as I stepped out, flanked by my generals, and saw Seran.

More notably, I saw the limp body he held in his arms.

The earth below us trembled and the plants that had been so artfully placed and led to grow in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible started to grow at an alarmingly fast pace, closing in on Seran and where he held the love of my life.

The bastard held a hand up, as though he could command me to stop with just a gesture.

“You’re going to regret the day you ever heard her name,” I snapped, fully allowing my darkness to take over, reaching for Seran with everything inside me, determined to maim, and hurt, and kill.

There was nothing the Seelie could say to ever get me to stop. It was Raina’s soft “Stop” that brought my magic to a halt. The ground stilled and the veins and branches that had been alive just moments before crumbled to the ground.

“Raina?” I breathed, scarcely allowing myself to believe that she was truly here.

Seran was holding her with one arm beneath her legs and one behind her back, but at her soft murmurs, he started to lower her to her feet.

Instead of fighting him, she grasped onto his bicep for stability. Seeing her hand on another man caused jealousy to course through my veins, but it was overridden by my relief at seeing her in one piece.

Though she had bruises around her neck and stood hunched over in a way that told me there were injuries I couldn’t see.

“Jaiden,” she called.

There was nothing in this world or any other that could’ve stopped me from going to her.

To my surprise, when I approached, Seran didn’t stop her from crossing over to me, falling into my arms, and tucking her face into my neck.

“Listen to your woman before you kill me,” warned Seran.

She looked up and took in the many onlookers in the courtyard. “We need to talk.”

When she met my gaze, she didn’t look like an injured human. She looked like a queen.
