Page 16 of Finding Beau

I gritted my teeth and pasted a fake smile on my face. I’d make sure that every damn Subject out there tonight would look at me and not him. I’d dance my fucking heart out and sing until my throat was sore. There was no way I was letting that bastard have Kings. It was ours.

I went all out, making sure my moves were sharper than his, my vocals louder and stronger, and I could see him watching me out of the corner of his eye. He’d best fucking take note. I’d be talking to Cho and Sammy after this, telling them what I’d learned.

In the middle of our second song, I glanced around the audience, my eyes falling on Beau.He looked so fucking good, but he was there with another guy. Standing so close to him, he couldn’t be anything but a boyfriend. Could he? Was I reading too much into it?

But there he was, dancing along, enjoying the music, his ‘friend’ doing the same. He said something to Beau, and I watched as he turned to face him, their faces so close. One more inch and they’d be kissing. Yeah, definitely more than friends.

Just then, Beau turned and his eyes met mine. I saw a flicker of a smile and almost smiled back. But Kasem’s threats and my disappointment at seeing Beau there with someone else had me turning away. I carried on dancing. This was what I needed to concentrate on. Not a one-night stand, which was what all this could ever be.

Towards the end of the set, I glanced over to where he’d been standing, but he was nowhere in sight, his place in the crowd taken by some girls, waving and screaming at Kasem.

Fuck. Why did Kasem have to join the band? Why did he have to ruin the only thing I’d ever loved and maybe lose me the first thing I’d wanted for myself—Beau.
