“I don’t know yet. I’m not sure where else I’d go and I still have my VA appointments here,” I say, taking another drink from my beer.

“Is that the only thing keeping you here or does that have anything to do with your date the other night?” he asks with a grin.

“Yep.”

Brooks laughs and I drain the last of my beer, pulling out two more for us.

“What’s her name?”

“Evangeline. She’s a year younger than me but we went to school together and since it’s such a small town, everyone knows everyone.”

“Is she pretty?”

“Oh yeah. She’s got these curves and this pitch-black hair that hangs halfway down her back. She’s so sweet and smart.”

“Lock that shit down,” Brooks advises me.

“I will,” I say under my breath but he hears me and grins.

“Let me know when the wedding is.”

“You’ll be the first invite that we send,” I promise.

“How’s your brother?”

“I’m not sure. I haven’t talked to him in a few days but he seemed alright.”

Brooks nods, draining his beer bottle and pointing down the hallway.

“Bathroom?”

“Yeah, first door on the left.”

He nods, heading that way and I pull my phone out, debating if I should call Gray or Ender. I land on Ender and hit dial.

“Hey, Mack. How’s it going?” he asks as soon as the call connects and I can hear the buzzing of tattoo machines in the background so I know that he’s at work at Eye Candy Ink.

“Hey, pretty good,” I say, shifting on my feet.

“I’m sorry to hear about your dad,” he says after a beat and I wonder what all Gray has told him about our dad.

“Thanks, that’s actually kind of why I’m calling,” I start.

“Everything okay?” Ender asks and I can hear the concern in his voice.

“Yeah, I called Gray last night and asked if he wouldn’t mind coming back to Rosewood to help me with our dad’s house.”

“You want me to come with him? I’m not great at construction but I can try,” he offers right away.

“No, I’m going to hire a company to help build the house I think. It’s more cleaning it out that’s the problem right now. I can get it and Gray said that he might come back to help.”

“Then what can I do?” Ender asks.

“Keep an eye on Gray for me? We’ve been talking but things are still a little weird between us and I don’t think that he would tell me if something was wrong. You see him every day and I was hoping that you would notice if he was acting strange. Things have been tense for a while with us and we talked about it last night. I just want to make sure that he’s okay with everything and is handling the funeral alright.”

“I will,” he promises and I believe him.

“Thanks, Ender,” I say sincerely and we catch up on other things for a few minutes.
