I tell him that I’ll be in Rosewood at least until I sell the house or land and he offers to show me around Pittsburgh if I’m ever up there for a visit.
Brooks comes back into the kitchen and I say my goodbyes to Ender and hang up.
“Was that Gray?”
“No, Ender.”
“What’s he up to?” he asks and I fill him in.
Special Forces is a pretty small group, and Ender, Brooks, and I have all done a few missions together.
“Pittsburgh, huh?” Brooks asks and I wonder if he’ll be headed that way soon too.
“Yeah, he’s been there for a few months now.”
Brooks nods, picking at the label on his bottle.
“Are you thinking about heading out east?” I ask and he shrugs.
“I’m not sure what to do now. What do I do with my skills and everything that I’ve learned now that I’m out?”
“Yeah, I’ve been feeling the same way,” I admit quietly.
“I checked out a few veteran meetings.”
“How was it?”
He shrugs and I nod.
“I don’t think that they can help us pick a career now or anything.”
“Yeah, it was more acclimating to civilization now that we’re back stateside.”
“We could always start a security company?” I offer, only half joking.
“Here in Rosewood? I’m not sure that there would be much demand for it,” he says with a grin and I laugh.
“I know. I was thinking of a bigger city.”
“It’s something to think about. Are you going to want to leave Rosewood though?” he asks and I pause.
A few days ago, my answer would have been hell yes, but now that I’ve started hanging out with Evangeline, I’m not so eager to leave.
“What time is Goodwill coming?”
“Any minute now,” I say, checking my watch.
As if on cue, the doorbell rings and we get back to work, hauling out the last of the furniture and other big items.
“I’m starving. Want to grab something to eat?” Brooks asks.
“Actually, I have to get back to the hotel and change before my date tonight.”
“Alright, maybe I’ll go out and check out the Rosewood nightlife myself.”
“Have fun,” I say with a laugh as I climb up into my new Jeep and head back toward our hotel.
