I shook my head as he spoke. Then I turned tae Quentin. “Ye are a military man, right? Tell me, honestly—“

Quentin said, “How’d you guess?”

James laughed. “Maybe the straight-ass way you sit on that stool?”

Quentin slumped down and everyone laughed.

I said, “Quentin, honestly, what is the downside of this deal?”

Quentin said, “The only downside is that some of us might want to stay at the castle sometimes, there are a lot of us—“

Fraoch said, “Verra many bairns, a muc and a cù—“

Blakely said, “And those are...?”

“Och, I forget... a pig and a dog. Also I will be needin’ tae come regular tae fish. Balloch daena hae the best fishin’—”

James laughed. “We know, we know, it’s not the best fishing, but a close second.”

Fraoch held up his beer bottle and clinked it with James’s.

Quentin said, “But as you know, it’s a big castle, there’s plenty of room.” He shrugged. “I would take it, honestly, it’s the deal of a lifetime.”

I exhaled long.

“Just tae get this straight, for later when I’m thinkin’ it over so I can make sense of it, ye want me tae become the owner of Taymouth castle. I can do whatever I want with it—?”

Magnus said, “Except sell it. Ye hae tae keep it in the family, but twill be yers for yer sons.”

“My sons...?”

Fraoch said, “Aye, they are... I mean, ye ken, ye will likely hae sons now ye are married.”

Blakely said, “We aren’t married... yet.”

Fraoch flustered. James kicked him.

Quentin said, “He just assumed, sorry about that.”

“And in exchange for becoming the owner of Taymouth castle, I would, in exchange, let ye stay there sometimes?”

Magnus said, “Aye, tis all we ask, but we will give ye time tae consider it.”

Quentin said, “And we really ought to be going.”

The men all stood.

James asked, “How long do you think you need?”

“I daena ken, a couple of weeks?”

James typed something intae his phone. “Cool, how about we come back then and we’ll talk.”

Blakely flipped through the paper. “Is there a number so we can call if we have questions?”

Quentin said, “Just write them down, we’ll answer them at the next meeting, no worries. Anyway, we’re really glad we found you, we wanted to get the lands back into the family. We’re glad you’re considering it.”

James asked, “How much for the drinks?”
