CHAPTERFORTY-NINE

London

“Scott,” I call from the living room.

Why am I so itchy? I scratch my arms and wait for Scott to emerge from the bedroom.

He leans against the doorframe. “Yeah?”

“Shane asked me to come out to the homestead,” I tell him.

“I’m not letting you go alone,” he retorts, crossing his arms, a hardened expression on his face.

“I don’t think I can drive, anyway.” I haven’t felt well lately, and I find myself getting more irritated.

Scott grabs a coat and hat, and we head out the door.

I’m glad that Shane wants to talk. Scott has been really nice, but I want to go home.

We pull up to the homestead, but it seems like no one is there.

“Wonder where he is?”

“Maybe he just stepped out,” Scott says, switching off the engine.

“Maybe.” I shrug. “Let’s check it out.”

I hear Snow’s voice. “Shane?”

“Snow?”

“Oh, London. I was looking for Shane, but they all left me.”

“You stupid bitch,” Scott hisses.

“Hello, Ben,” she says calmly.

“Ben?” Confused and scowling, I whirl on him.

“My real name is Ben,” Scott says.

“Where is Shane?” I ask, not quite understanding what’s going on.

“I don’t know,” she admits. “We had this thing planned because he needed to talk to you. But I came out and they were all gone.”

“I’m not stupid. I hacked their phones and sent them texts saying Ever was in labor.” Ben smirks. “It will be a while since they will have to go to Atlanta before figuring it out.”

“The show is at Jimmy’s. They’re waiting for her. They will know.”

“Same text to Austin, except that filming stays on course.” Ben chuckles, his features contorting into nothing short of malice.

“What’s going on?” I’m trying to follow but I can’t.

“He’s been drugging you,” Snow informs me.

“No, he hasn’t,” I snap.

“That. What you just did. Are you feeling itchy? Or irritated? Forgetful?”
