He didn’t need to finish his sentence. I knew what he was going to say.

She hadn’t slept that soundly since she and I broke up. Since I hurt her. Since I abandoned her.

Since I destroyed her.

“I’m going to do what I can to make this right, Trent,” I promised him.

He blew out a harsh breath. “I appreciate that,” he said quietly. “Just save her before it’s too late, yeah? Because we’re trying everything and making zero progress.”

I nodded. I thought about the cut on her wrist, but I didn’t say anything. For now, I would let that remain mine and Bailey’s secret. I needed her to trust me again. I wouldn’t break her trust, especially when that trust was so fucking fragile.

Without trust, she and I would never have a chance of mending this shit between us.

Trent clapped a hand to my back. “You hungry?”

I shook my head. “Nah. I need to head home—work on this paper I got assigned. Thanks for letting me talk to her.”

He nodded. “Thank you for finally coming around, Seth.” He narrowed his eyes at me and crossed his arms over his broad chest. “But don’t fuck up again. I’ll make you regret the day you were fucking born if you do, Seth.”

I already regretted that day.

Instead, I just nodded once and strode down the stairs. Jacob was leaning against his car when I walked outside. He narrowed his eyes at me. “Fucking hurt her again, Seth, and you’ll find out what it’s liked to get your ass kicked, you hear me?”

I nodded at him before I slid into my car. I glanced up at the second story of the house, wishing I could see her window. But her room faced the backyard—not the front.

I just hoped she would respond to my messages in the morning. I was hoping and praying like hell that our talk tonight opened up some form of communication between us.

Because I hadn’t been lying. I wasn’t going anywhere. I was here, and I was back for good.
