My heart skipped a beat. I was on a video call with Dad that morning when he gave me this shocking news.

“She did the DNA Test and it proved she is not Khushi Thakur. I wonder where our Khushi is. I..”

He kept talking while I tried to contemplate my next actions. My secret was not very far from being exposed.

“Rudra?” Dad’s voice broke my reverie. “Don’t you think all this is suspicious? Where can our Khushi go? She has been missing from two long years. I’ll speak to the police and-”

“No,” I snapped, unable to believe my father was digging a grave for me. If he informed the Police of Khushi’s sudden absence, it won’t take them long to investigate and find out I was responsible for her going missing.”

“What do you mean no? We have to find her.” Dad argued. “In fact, you should be the one desperate to look for her. You love her Rudra.”

I looked away, unable to meet his eyes. Wish this wasn’t a video call. I knew my father would pick it up from my expressions that I was hiding something. I could mask it all so far, not anymore.

“Rudra? What is happening? Do you know where she is?”

“How would I know where she is, Dad? And to be honest I am not interested in looking for her anymore. She is not a kid that needed assistance in returning to us. If she wanted me, she would have come back. She didn’t. I think it’s better to let her go now.”

Dad remained silent for a moment.

“You can’t be serious, Rudra. How can you be so cruel? Did you know the woman you had next to you for the last two years was not your Khushi but Jhanvi? Because forget being shocked by her DNA test result, you are not even bothered to find the woman you once loved. That’s strange. Why do I think you are hiding something? Are you responsible for Khushi’s disappearance?”

I banged my fist on the table, next to the laptop screen.

“Enough Dad. I don’t have time for your silly accusations. I have work to do.”

“Means my suspicions are right. What are you hiding, Rudra?” he shouted. “Just remember one thing. If I ever get to know you have done something bad, I am going to disown you.”

Though his threats shocked me, I didn’t bother to continue debating at that moment. Doing so would do no good to me.

But that conversation led me to recall the flashback of the time when Khushi and I had that disastrous argument.

Two Years Ago – New York.

“Khushi stop. You are overreacting.” I tried to snatch the clothes Khushi was dumping in her bag from her closet. But she pushed me out of her way and kept packing her stuff.

It’s all my fault. Last night’s party I had no control over myself and despite knowing I love Khushi, I couldn’t control myself when Rita, one of our Clients at RS Group approached me. I was so drunk that I spent the night with her but before I could feel guilty this morning, Khushi saw us together in the Hotel room. It was at that instant I knew my relationship with Khushi had come to an end. She was not going to tolerate me cheating on her even if it was for one night.

“Get out of my way, Rudra. I am not interested in even talking to you.”

She reached for her bags on the bed and began dumping her clothes. We had been living together from past one year and everything was going great until last night. I wasn’t ready to lose my four-year-old love story because of one night.

“I’ll write my resignation from the RS Group this week. I don’t even want to work with you anymore.”

“What?” I growled. “Khushi you are going too far.”

She spun around in rage.

“I’m going too far, Rudra? Can’t believe you are saying this. Whatever you did last night, is the breaking point of everything we had so far. I can bear anything but infidelity.”

She dragged her bag down the bed.

“Khushi don’t do this. We can sort this thing out. I swear, it won’t happen again.”

I kept blocking her way, but she didn’t stop. I knew once she broke up with me everything was over. She would never give me another chance. The damage was done and I was solely responsible for it.

I followed her to the passage and before she could take the stairs, I dragged her to me again.

“One chance is all I’m asking, Khushi. Please. Don’t leave me like this.”
