“So what are we writing about?” Alek asks.

“There will be two teams in this contest. The Medinas against the Anakonis. We will see who has better skills in logic and reasoning. Who can read each other best.”

“You’re screwed,” Noa says to Ino.

That starts the friendly war. All the siblings from either side of the table, send threats and insulting comments across the aisle. Just as if they have known each other for years. Like they have spent so many holidays in each other’s company, it doesn’t matter what is said in jest.

“You’re going down!” Kala calls to Noa. For emphasis she adds narrowed eyes and a pointed finger. He stares at her blankly.

“That’s what she said.”

Not one person at the table is offended by his joke. By the hoots they like him more. Even Kala thinks it’s funny as hell. Nani shakes her head but there is a smile behind sparkling eyes.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with, man!”

Kimo hollers above the voices.

“Wait! Shut the hell up everybody! Let’s find out what the game is!”

“So here it is. Nani has a list of three things about her children. Threetruethings that actually happened to one of them. And I have provided her with my own children’s tales of fuckery.”

“Oh shit! This is going to be wild.”

Nani interrupts. “So for my family, you will be guessing which statement applies to which of Lani’s children. And in return they will be guessing which Medina man is guilty of your stories.”

“So we have to come to an agreement?”

“That’s right, Makani. So this is not only about reasoning, but about working together. And you will have one chance to change your final answers at the end.”

“Oh, we have it in the bag.”

Mak grins, secure in the knowledge his brothers and he will be victorious. But I see the same look on Kala, Ino, and Kimo’s faces. It’s on!

“Oh! And do your talking out loud so we all can hear. That will be the fun of it. Let us know how and why you are arriving at your decisions.”

“Okay, okay let’s start. I’m flipping a coin to see who goes first.”

You would think this is a Super Bowl game. The players are waiting to see who will have the advantage.

I think going first will be the best position. At least the other team will hear how they reason and get a clearer picture of who each of them are.

“Noa, call it,” Lani says, flipping the quarter.

“Heads!”

“Tails it is!”

The Anakoni family yells their excitement. Even Lily and little Palani jump and scream.

“Boom! Take that!”

“Go first, go first!” Kala yells to her brothers.

Then she whispers something in Ino’s ear, and he whispers into Kimo’s. They obviously agree with whatever was said.

“We want our stories told first!”

Noa meets his female rival’s stare.
