“But…?”
Jesse and I look at each other and sigh. There’s no way of getting out of this. “We made out,” I admit.
Joel nods. Not in an understanding way. More of anI’m gonna hit somethingsort of way.
“Rae, would you please let me talk with my brother alone?”
I exchange a glance with Jesse, who nods.
I walk toward the door, but once I’m safely out of Joel’s range of vision, I mouth over his shoulder,thanks.
Jesse smirks at me.
“Go, Rae,” Joel says sharply.
I stifle a laugh and walk out of the room, closing the door behind me.
I’m not even to the top of the stairs when I hear Joel yell, “You made out with her? Right after she dumped her boyfriend? What the hell is wrong with you? She’s my best friend!”
I laugh to myself and head down the stairs. I’d feel a little bad for Jesse, but he can handle himself. And in a fight, he might win, anyway.
I wander into the kitchen where Miles and Aaron are talking.
When I walk in, they look at me expectantly.
“Where have you been?” Aaron asks.
Miles raises his eyebrows and smirks at me.
“Upstairs with Jesse,” I say, like it’s no big thing. I might as well tell them. Joel will anyway.
“With Jesse? Doing what?” Aaron asks me, shocked.
I don’t answer right away, which makes them both widen their eyes.
“Rae… did you—” Miles begins with way too big of a grin on his face.
“We didn’t hook up. We just made out.”
“Seriously?” Aaron asks, genuinely surprised. He inhales deeply, almost looking… sad? He shakes his head, in disbelief maybe, and walks out the back door to the deck.
I’m staring after him when a door slamming upstairs grabs my attention. Miles and I laugh.
“So just made out?” he asks.
“Yes. I wanted someone else’s lips to have been the last ones I kissed. I’m so done with Davey. I wanted to rid him of everything he touched.”
“Everything?” Miles asks.
“Okay, I wasn’t gonna rush intothat.”
“Weren’t going to?”
“I swear we only made out.”
He narrows his eyes at me.
“Okay, our shirts might have been off. And my bra.”
