“Our conversation is not done,” he shouted from where he stood while Venom shook his head clear and began to rise.

“It is over for me. You said if I cured you, you would let me go. Well, you are cured, so I’m leaving.”

“Venom will be alright. Get on, Soulris…”The new Dragon’s wing touched the ground, surprising me.

His thoughts were crystal clear in my mind, except, they weren't thoughts transforming into words like I’d experienced until now. He was literally talking to me. It was his actual voice I was hearing, and I didn’t even know him.

“Get on. We need the help.”Venom’s voice urged in my mind, and my eyes almost popped out of my head. He was talking to me too?!

What the hell had changed in me?

Perplexed, I did as they wanted. Jumping onto the new Dragon’s wing, I made my way to its neck and stood on it, glancing down at the Warlock King through my golden gaze.

“I know what you are, Braxton!” he announced just as his sphere glowed brightly.

I swiftly ducked, looking at Venom and fearing he would be knocked out by Raithian’s power again, but he wasn’t. His wings spread and he looked to the sky, flapping them to get out of there. Worry urged me to check on my new friend too, hoping the attack wasn’t sent to him. It wasn’t. Then, what the hell did Raithian’s light mean?

“You have no idea, do you?” His question pulled my attention back to him just as we lifted into the air.

Holding onto one of the five small horns on the tan-lavender Dragon’s head—spreading out like a crown—I glanced down at the Warlock King. “I have no interest in anything you have to say!”

An air of a challenge entered his expression, accompanied by something dark and scary, and unshakable certainty.

“Your kind of magic is not common,” he added, ignoring my response.

Yeah, no shit.I snorted.

“I can teach you how to wield it, Braxton. I can show you everything you can do… Only I have the power to help you!” he yelled over the whipping winds growing around us as the lavender-tan Dragon turned in the sky, ready to fly away. “You need me!”

With one massive flap of my new friend’s wings, we lunged into full flight, getting far from him with Venom right beside us. I didn’t answer him. I just watched him fade away in the golden-hued distance while a sinister feeling chilled me to my bones.

Had Raithian discovered who I truly was?

Did he know now that I was his grandson?

More importantly, did he now covet my power as much as he had his father’s, who he killed to steal it? I couldn’t answer the first two questions, yet the third one was clear.

The Warlock King had tasted the power of my newly awakened magic and he would stop at nothing to claim it as his own.
