“I’m sorry,” she whimpers against me.

“No need to apologise,” I tell her. “I’m here for you.”

“Every time I go to sleep, that dream plays in my head.”

I shouldn’t do it, but considering the line has been well and truly leapt over, I don’t see what it matters.

“Scoot over,” I say.

She does as I ask, allowing me to sit next to her, my back to the headboard. “What are you doing?” she asks.

“I’ll stay while you sleep.”

Her brows come together. “You don’t need to do that.”

I don’t and I shouldn’t, but I want to. I don’t want her to be alone after waking up screaming.

“Lie down,” I order. Aurelia pauses but then does as I ask. I pull her against my chest and her arm wraps around my waist, her body pressed along my side. “The dreams… are they always the same?”

“Yes,” she says. I hear the wobble in her voice. “He’s always coming for me and Sariah.”

“Have you talked to her about it?”

“I don’t want to offload my problems onto her. I’m sure she has enough nightmares of her own about that bastard.”

That is probably true. If Aurelia is struggling, it’s likely Sariah is too.

“You should talk to her.”

“Maybe.”

I stroke her arm, just enjoying this moment with her.

“Try to sleep.”

“I don’t know if I can.”

“I’ll stay. Nothing will happen to you.”

“Why can’t I stop dreaming about that day?”

“Because it was traumatic and you’re human.”

Her fingers trail over my hip. “I don’t think I can deal with any more.”

“Wood is dead, Lia. He can’t hurt you.”

“I know, but he’s not the only threat, is he?”

He isn’t, and that’s something that will have to be dealt with at some point. “Do you trust me?”

Aurelia peers up my chest to look at me. “Yes.”

“Then trust me when I tell you I’m not going to let anything touch you.”

She leans up and presses her mouth to mine. I don’t stop her. I should, but instead I hug her closer as she kisses me. Her fingers trail over my hem, pulling my shirt up to reveal my stomach. This is the point I should grab her hand and tug her away.

I don’t.
