“That isn’t true.”

The corners of his mouth twitch. “Let me finish, please. I might not ever get the balls to bear my soul again.”

“Okay,” I whisper as tears start filling my eyes.

“I don’t deserve you, but I’ll spend the rest of my life earning you if you’ll let me. I like the man you make me want to be.” He catches the first tear as it falls, wiping it with his thumb. “And I love you. I love you so much. You’re the entire world to me.”

“I knew I loved you before you left for that meeting,” I admit. “But if I hadn’t, I would have known it for sure when I saw the car rolling up to the front gate. The thought of losing you was enough to get me back in that disgusting tunnel even when I knew what was happening on the other end. I had to go back.”

“Do you love me?”

“Like crazy.” And I’m pretty sure my heart’s going to explode in the split second before Luca kisses me. It’s like being kissed for the first time, the way it’s supposed to be. All those feelings I used to read about in water-stained romance novels I’d find under my mom’s bed. The swelling of my heart, the rush of joy, the sense of the final puzzle piece falling into place. Like I’ve finally found where I belong.

I just happened to stumble into it by accident, is all. Then again, being here—pretending to be my sister—was an act of love. And that love grew into something bigger and stronger than anything I knew before.

“You and me?” Luca asks with a tender smile, his forehead touching mine.

I close my eyes and offer a silent prayer of gratitude. “You and me,” I agree. Nothing has ever sounded more right.
