“You did? I was just kidding. I didn’t think he’d actually call you.”

“He didn’t call. He came over.”

“He showed up at your apartment? When?”

“After he went to Gladys’ house.”

“Why? What did he want?”

“He said he wanted to make sure I got home safe but I’m guessing he wanted sex.”

“Did he try anything?”

“No. He didn’t even come inside.”

“Then he wasn’t there for sex. He was just doing like he said, making sure you got home safe. You have to stop making all these assumptions about people. Not everyone has bad intentions.”

“If I’d invited him into my apartment, we would’ve done it.”

“Only if you agreed to it.”

“Did you see how hot he looked last night? Of course I would’ve agreed to it. That’s why I didn’t invite him in.”

“You make no sense.”

“If it could be just sex and nothing else, then I would’ve done it. But Mr. Sensitive has to turn it into a relationship, which doesn’t work when we don’t live in the same town.”

“It could work. You just don’t want it to, which I don’t understand. Josh is a great guy. He had me laughing so hard last night I could barely finish my dinner. If you don’t want him, do you care if I date him?”

There’s silence and then, “Are you serious?”

“No! Nina, I know better than to date a friend’s ex. But the way you reacted just now shows how much you still like him. So why’d you let Lacey ask him out?”

“Because he’s not mine. He can go out with anyone he wants.”

“You could’ve asked him to the fundraiser as a friend.”

“We can’t be friends. It doesn’t work. And as for Josh and Lacey, I doubt it’ll go anywhere. She’s not his type.”

Jesse appears with another bag of garbage. He looks my way as he tosses it in the dumpster.

“I have to go. My break’s almost over.”

“Ok. What time’s he coming over tonight?”

“Six.”

“What time should I call with the fake emergency?”

She’s referring to the thing girls do to escape a bad date. But this isn’t a date. It’s just neighbors having dinner.

“I don’t think I’ll need it.”

“You always think you won’t, but you never know. I’ll call around six-thirty. And you better pick up or I’ll think he killed you and I’ll call the cops.”

I tell her goodbye as Jesse approaches, then quickly put my phone away.

“I’m not late,” I tell him. “Besides, you said I could take a longer break.”
