Page 3 of Pretty Lies

I know if I tell him she’s still missing, he’ll rip out every damn tube in him and fight his way out of here to go looking for Lexi. I also know that he’d get himself hurt or killed if he does that, and I can’t lose him too.

So, I do what I do best, I lie.

I smile as genuine as I can, letting a little chuckle slip free, “She’s fine. Little banged up but fine.”

The falsehood tastes utterly bitter on my tongue, burning my throat as though my lies are as acidic as the contents of my stomach. I can only hope he doesn’t remember that she was taken out of the car by Alan.

“What about your fuckface father?”

“When you’re out of here, we’re going to find him together. Right now, I have everyone at our disposal looking for him. I’m running a constant scanner for debit and credit card activity all across the country. Drake pulled some strings as well and put Alan as a threat to the FAA. He will not be able to step foot in an airport without being arrested. All I need is for you to do whatever the doctors tell you so you can get better.”

“Lexi is okay?” He asks again, his words slightly slurred as the morphine begins to flow through his bloodstream.

Despite the heavy pain medication, I can still see the suspicion in his gaze.

“Yeah, she’s good.”

Luce’s eyes roll closed, but he doesn’t fall asleep until he says one last thing that will eat away at my consciousness.

“Pretty lies are sweeter than ugly truths.”
