Leo continues to give orders to Hector, but my mind drifts.

This fucker, Reyes, will not stop until he has me. He's gone to great lengths to get to me, and now he kidnapped an innocent girl. Wait!

I jerk my head toward Leo, "What about Miguel's daughter? Please tell me you'll get her back. I know his methods were fucked, but you know damn well, family is everything."

His eyes flit to me, “Hector, I’ll call you back.”

Oops, I hadn’t realized he was still on the phone.

He ends the calls and lifts my hand to his lips, "Yes, family is everything, but he tried to hurt mine. Nonetheless, I will do everything in my power to get her back, Dice. I promise you."

"How?"

We pull to a red light, and Leo turns his black eyes to me, "Don't worry about it, baby girl. I give you my word, we will rescue her."

"But what if they're hurting her, Leo?"

"Don't do that, baby. You have no idea how badly I want to go storming into every Reyes house, but if I do that, they will certainly kill her and possibly me. I'm keeping Miguel alive for now so he can arrange for a meet-up with Danny. I'm going to have him pretend to have you as a hostage for the life of his daughter."

"How—"

"No, Dice. It's best if you don't know any details."

His voice is tight, and his jaw is clenched. I feel like I'm unable to breathe once again with the intensity of his stare.

When the light turns green, he turns back to the road and I exhale a shaky breath. No, Leo didn't scare me... what made my breath stick in my throat and my heart pound in my ears, was what I saw flashing in his eyes...fear?

But of what?

"Why?"

He's quiet for a moment, seemingly lost in thought as he drives through Chicago traffic. I give up on getting an answer by the time we pull into the underground garage for his building, but when I go to open my door, Leo stops me.

I turn to him with a brow cocked, irritated that he wants me in his life, but he won't open up in all aspects, including his business.

Leo holds up a hand at the guards that approach the car as I tell him my thoughts, "If you want me—all of me—you have to give me all of you, Leo. You can't be half in, half out. All or none."

Like he usually does when he needs to touch me, Leo caresses my face from the apple of my cheek to my chin, "I don't want to tell you because the weight of the conscious is heavy. Are you willing to have visions of your hands dripping in red and feel your soul blacken with the choices I make? If so, I'll give it all to you, but if I can spare you the weight," He bites his lower lip and tilts his head down to look me in the eye, "I will because this shit is heavy."

Seeing the dark pain in Leo’s eyes makes something inside me snap.

All my life, I’ve lived in a way that was supposed to keep me safe. I followed the laws and lived abidingly. My mother did everything she could to keep me safe, she even denied herself another man to love after my father was murdered. She had to listen to my harsh and bitter words about him for years, just to keep me safe.

All the fucking good that has done for us.

I could easily blame all of this on meeting Leo but fuck that. I’ve never reached the deep end of my limitations, but now? I’m in the fucking deep end.

Leo is never going to deal with this alone. My mother won’t have to worry about Reyes trying to kill me because of my bloodline and I’m never going to have a gun at my head again.

Fuck that. I’m all in now.

I lean in and kiss him, opening my mouth to grant him entrance. I swallow down his moan and deepen the kiss before pulling back, "I want you, Leo. All of you. Not parts and pieces. Not just the light baggage, either. We're a team, no?"

Leo smiles, and my heart squeezes so tightly, it hurts. I am falling for him. No, scratch that, I'm already in love with him. He’s beautiful and protective. He'll kill and maim for me and not lose a bit of sleep over it.

He loves me too.

He hasn't said it, but even a blind man can see it.

"Yeah, baby, we're a team."
