“I thought you were never going to return it to me.”

“I am only going to return it to you if you do something for me.” His blue eyes glinted wickedly.

Elizabeth pushed the covers aside and stood. “What do you want?”

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small white square which he unfolded before handing it to her. “Read it and tell me if you still think that is who I am.”

Elizabeth saw it was her foolish list of things she hated about him, and she looked up with a sheepish smile. “Must I?”

Rhys nodded slowly, smiling with only one corner of his mouth turned up. “Read, Athena, if you want your shield returned to you.”

Huffing, she began to read. “Point the first, he is an insufferable ass.”

His brows rose. “Am I?”

She laughed. “Yes, you are. You are making me read this.” She waved the sheet.

“Very well,” he chuckled. “Continue.”

“His arrogance confounds me.”

“Does it?”

“Rhys, you are the personification of arrogance.”

“Pride,” he corrected.

“My point exactly.” She laughed before reading the third line. “He is certain to make any woman who marries him miserable.” He raised a brow in question, and she felt herself blush. “You make me very happy.”

“Good.” A wide grin split across his face. “Please continue.”

“An irredeemable rake. He is the cruelest man I have ever met, and he—” the rest was smudged with ink, but she knew exactly what it said, and she told him now. “He is my most dangerous desire.” He stepped toward her. His eyes began to darken with heat. She glanced down and found the fifth point covered with ink, too.

“Tell me what you covered,” he whispered.

“He makes me want to give myself to him.”

His arm circled her waist. “I have wondered for countless hours.”

“Sixth. Handsome as sin, heart of coal.”

“Have you seen my heart, Liza?”

“Yes,” she breathed, “and it beats for me.”

“Yes.” He brushed his lips against hers. “It will always beat for you.”

She glanced at the sheet again and the last point was covered, too. “Seventh. I am in danger of falling helplessly, hopelessly, and restlessly in love with him.”

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

He took the sheet from her hands and tossed it aside before sitting on the divan and pulling her down on top of him. “Show me,” he commanded.

The End?
